Raise your own seedlings at home. Seed raising kit.
(three kits side by side shown in photo)
Raise your own seedlings. It costs less, minimises the risk of bringing home aphids and other diseases from the plant nursery.
Just imagine, in a packet of lettuce seed there is usually over 500 seeds. That is close to 500 lettuce. Nature is so abundant. Buy 500 seedlings (over time) from the plant nursery shop will cost you over $500.00. A packet of really good lettuce seed costs between $2 and $3
Tray is partly filled with water from your Aquaponics system.
The net pots are 3/4 filled with course vermiculite.
Seeds are dropped onto the vermiculite, try to use only one seed at a time.
The seeds are only just covered with the fine vermiculite.
Tag the row you have just planted using the sign-age sticks provided with plant type and date planted.
The water is wicked up by the vermiculite keeping the seeds moist. The tray of water will last several days in summer. You can go away for the weekend and not worry about your seed raising system drying out.
When the plants are ready to plant out into the garden or Aquaponics system they are easily removed from the net pot and the excess vermiculite gently shaken off the roots. If you have an Aquaponics deep water trough just drop the entire net pot and seedling into the raft. It is that easy.
The plants suffer no transplant shock.
